It is a very good book, with some truly beautiful writing. One of L'Engle's great strengths is writing prose that moves along quickly while still being poetic. She doesn't waste words, but also doesn't skip too lightly over them. And her characters and landscapes are seen with real detail and warmth. Her books are very easy to read even late at night, when lying tired in bed. I've reviewed the first three of this series, if you're interested.

Never be ashamed for reading "kids'" books or "young adult" books! I hold with C.S. Lewis, who lamented that the modern age is so intent on labeling books by the age group they are supposed to be appropriate for. Of course, children often are not interested in many adult books, cannot easily digest them, and in some cases should not be exposed to their content before adulthood. However, any book that is genuinely good for a child will be genuinely good for anyone older to read as well. Again, Lewis, paraphrased: "I am tempted to set it up as a rule that any book that can be enjoyed only by children is a bad book."

Also, while L'Engle's books are certainly excellent for children, I'd never call them children's, or even "young adult," books. They are simply books, and good books. +)
